What’s new about inequality in Europe in 2023?

The 2023 update of the World Inequality Database includes new data  up to 2022 for Europe, including new data sources and findings for France, Bulgaria, Romania and the Czech Republic.

  • After a decline in 2020, the pre-Covid trend of rising inequality continued in Europe from 2021.
  • Although Europe remains the least unequal region in the world, the richest 10% of Europeans earn twice as much as the poorest 50% of the population.

  • This year we gathered new data for France allowing us to expand the existing DINA series up to 2022 and showing that:
    • The top 1% share in France has quickly recovered in recent years, now exceeding the pre-2008 financial crisis levels.
    • Since 2017, the top 1% share has gained 2 percentage points to reach 12.7% in 2022. Inequality at the top is at its highest level since World War II.

  • Average income in Eastern Europe approaches European Union average, but significant inequalities remain between countries.
