New research uncovers key mistakes in Auten and Splinter’s estimates of US inequality

Thomas Piketty, Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman fleshed out their response to Auten and Splinter’s paper published in the Journal of Political Economy (2024), which denies the scale of the increase in inequality in the United States since 1960.

WIL researchers uncovered key mistakes in Auten and Splinter’s allocation of untaxed income. After fixing them and confronting them with existing evidence, Auten and Splinters’ methodology implies the same rise of inequality as Piketty, Saez and Zucman (2018).
