What’s new about inequality in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2023?

The 2023 update of the World Inequality Database confirms that income inequality remains very high in Sub-Saharan Africa:

  • The richest 10% in the region control almost 56% of total income, matching regions characterized by extreme inequality, such as Latin America and India.
  • The map of top 10% shares across African countries shows a pronounced North-South gradient of increasing inequality.
  • South Africa has the highest level of income inequality and is characterized by unprecedented levels of wealth concentration.
