What’s new about inequality in Latin America in 2023?

The 2023 update of the World Inequality Database includes new findings for Latin America.

  • First opportunity to study Covid-19’s impact on Latin American inequality using 2020-2021 data from household surveys and administrative sources.
  • In-kind transfers counteract regressive tax systems, resulting in lower income concentration in post-tax versus pre-tax data. However, post-tax inequality remains substantial.
  • Significant update in Colombia with the DIAN (National Tax and Customs Directorate) publicly releasing income tax tabulations from 2014 to 2020.
  • Noteworthy innovation in Chile‘s CASEN survey, undergoing a weighting methodology shift for improved accuracy and reliability in income data.
