What’s new about inequality in North America and Oceania in 2023?

The 2023 update of the World Inequality Database includes new findings for North America and Oceania:

  • The United States (US) remains an outlier of the region: more than 20% of US national income is going to the richest 1% of the population (and nearly 50% to the top 10%). No other country in the region exceeds 12% of national income to the top 1% (or 35% to the top 10%).
  • Income inequality remains at similar levels in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
  • Data from New Zealand, now available through mid-2022, highlights a striking surge in inequality during the pandemic year of 2020, but which has now returned to pre-pandemic levels.
